1. Organize and De-junk Home

First things first, de-clutter your life by de-cluttering your home. There is a lot of space to do with and require more than just making a bed or cleaning out the closet. Think about it, when was the last time you wiped out the oven or dusted the inside of the light fixtures. Sounds like a daunting and "I don't have time for this" kind of project, however, jumping in and achieving this will allow you and your home to feel refreshed. Make sure to make a list of all the problem areas before you begin.

2. Paint a New Wall Color

Before being a gallon of your favorite color, make sure to check with the landlord or apartment management to confirm this is allowed. The shade on the walls you currently have may be affecting your atmosphere more than you realize. Think of how you want your space to feel and pair it with colors that coincide with that. For example:

  • Blue: trust, faith, stable, power
  • Green: soothing, envy, balance, natural
  • Yellow: cheer, attention, fresh, warmth, energy
  • Red: love, passion, anger, energy

3. Incorporate Smell

Keeping your home clean can obviously help with this. Going in further, people very quickly get used to the odor of their own home, so switching the candle up or applying a new Glade freshener can implement a new welcoming feeling when you come in. Candles are also a great way to relax and unwind. Here is a certain list to familiarize yourself with and compare with your current mood.

The Mind Journal shares this bizarre fact about smell and it's affect on us as human beings.

"Guinness World Record holder, endurance athlete and author Christopher Bergland writes “Smell is often the first warning of safety or danger, friend or foe. Smells have the power to drive your behavior on an instinctive and subconscious level."

4. Lighting

Lighting goes a long way in regards to the vibe of yourself and your home. The more light that comes in makes the home cheery, whereas the lack of light can conclude that the vibe of the home is sad or needing space. So, open those curtains and inhale the sunlight. One source claims,

"Dr. Bligard says there are many benefits from sunlight, including that it is a free mood enhancer. Being in the sun can make people feel better and have more energy. Sunlight increases the levels of serotonin in the brain, which is associated with improved mood. Not surprisingly, serotonin levels are highest in the summer." (LiveWell)

Make sure to let that light shine through.

5. Bring in Life (no not children)

Bring in new life to enhance your own! No, I am not referring to children! This can be plants, or flower pots, heck even a painting of either. Even if you do not have that greenthumb, focusing on life can brighten up your household.

"They essentially do the opposite of what we do when we breathe: release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. This not only freshens up the air, but also eliminates harmful toxins." (NBC News)
